What They Do: Founded in 1998 as a FASF Group subsidiary, BASF Plant Science bills itself as the world’s leading chemical company and leading research and technology platform for plant biotechnology. The company says its mission is to “deliver more with less” through genetic modification of plants. The company has 112,000 employees with more than 376 production sites around the world. It collaborates with other leading seed, food and feed companies. Its "special milestones," according to the company website, include genetically modified, herbicide-resistant soybeans in 2009, and most recently, the world’s first genetically modified, drought-resistant corn (developed jointly with Monsanto).
What They Produce: Genetically modified corn, cotton, canola, sugarcane, soybeans, fungicides, and herbicides. It also is experimenting with genetically “enhanced” potatoes and sugar beets.
